I have received several questions about how to upload icons or emoticons to your forum. Well, fellow forum admins, now that I've learned how to take screenshots of the computer, it's time to put up my new, improved guide on how to customize images.
The first installment is: Emoticons.
1. Find a site somewhere that has the emoticons you want. I got the emoticons for this forum at this site. There are other emoticons there too.
2. Once you find the emoticon you want, right-click on it to bring up a menu. Select “Properties” from the menu to bring up a window which lists the picture’s properties, including the url. Highlight the url and copy it (Ctrl + C).

3. Time to host the image. A good site for this purpose is www.imageshack.us/. Choose to upload a url rather than a file, then paste the url of the picture you just copied into the text box. I didn’t bother with checking any of the boxes underneath that… so you can just go on to click “host it!” to host the image.

4. It will give you a list of 5 lines of text you can copy. The only one we’re really interested in is the last one – “Direct link to image”. Highlight and copy the url, and it’s time for the next step.

5. Back to your forum. Go to the Admin Area. I’d hope everyone knows where the Admin Area is located… if you don’t, it’s located at this url:
yourboardname.proboardsXX.com/index.cgi?action=admin
Where “yourboardname” is, enter the name of your own board, and enter the number after “proboards” where the X’s are located. Anyhoo, once you get to the admin area, access the link called “Skins/Forum Colors”.
(Click here 4 a picture. Ooh... we get a glimpse of my Area of the Administration. Fun!)
6. Then select the link called “Customize Images”. (Click here for a picture) This will bring you to a page where you can select what skin you want to customize the images for. Select the one you want, then click Continue.

7. Now you get to customize the images. Scroll down the page until you reach the Smiley Faces section. Look for the smiley face that you want to replace with the new picture. Remember the image url you copied back in Step 4? Paste it into the text box beside the smiley face you want to change.

8. Repeat steps 1 to 4 for every image you want to upload to your forum. I suggest you open a new window to do this so you’ll always have one window open to your forum admin area.
9. When you are finished, DO NOT forget to click on the Save Changes button!
That concludes my lecture on how to upload emoticons. Before doing this, though, make sure to check for copyright notices on the site you’re getting your pictures from.
