***Warning. If you are a fan of Ash Ketchum and Pikachu, DO NOT read the following post. Just warning you in advance.***
I guess everyone knows about Ash Ketchum from Pokemon. He annoys me SO MUCH sometimes! Pikachu too! There are just some times I'd like to execute the both of them!
For one, Pikachu's overpopularity is overblown to overly unnecessary over-proportions. Come on, there's a such thing as being too popular. Pikachu just achieved that several years ago. I have to admit, there have got to be others out there that are tired of Pikachu playing the starring role in just about every episode. In almost all Pokemon battles, Pikachu's the first Pokemon that Ash calls on. Even if the type matchup is not to his advantage and another of Ash's Pokemon could do a much better job, Ash still calls on Pikachu way too much. And whenever Pikachu battles, there seems to be one of two outcomes - 1/ Pikachu positively pwns the other Pokemon, even when its attacks are not very effective (if anyone has read the manga, they'll know that in the battle against Brock, Pikachu kicked Onix's behind in about two seconds using an electric attack. Uh, hello? Doesn't the Rock/Ground type Onix completely resist electric attacks due to the fact that Ground Pokemon are immune to electricity?), or 2/ Pikachu gets defeated, and a dramatic almost-death soap-opera-worthy scene follows. I've seen Pikachu rushed to the Pokemon Centre by a traumatic Ash much too many times for my approval. Sure, there are dramatic Pokemon Centre scenes with other Pokemon as well (i.e. in Episode 11, "Charmander - the Stray Pokemon", Charmander actually lands itself in the ER because it's stayed out in the rain too long), but more often than not, it's Pikachu that's the star of all those overly-dramatic Pokemon Centre scenes that should have been classified as their own individual soap operas. Is Pikachu invincible, or what? Why must he keep almost-dying like this? Why can't he just go the whole distance and save us from looking at his disgustingly popular face whenever we turn on an episode of Pokemon?
Ash is almost as bad. He's one of those people who always seems to win no matter what. And he takes the almost-dying thing to an entirely different level. Of all the Pokemon movies, I've only seen the first, second, fifth and seventh. In three out of those four movies, he almost died and someone had to save him. Three out of four is pretty bad when you're talking about something like this. In the first movie, Mew and Mewtwo turned him into stone, and the other Pokemon had to save him by combining their tears or something... and the whole thing was started by Pikachu. Man, Pikachu, why couldn't you have just left him the way he was...? Anyway, in the second movie, Ash was riding on Lugia's back when that collector jerk (I believe his name was Lawrence III) shot Lugia down into the sea. The result was, of course, Ash almost drowning. Pikachu helped save him again (that gloryhog) and Misty helped too (good, glad to see she's getting some popularity ^^). In the fifth movie, Ash almost died yet again when Aerodactyl shot him with a Hyper Beam attack. Ash fell into one of the city's canals and this time it was Latias that saved him (I <3 Latias, but why did she have to save Ash?). I've never seen the third, fourth or sixth movies, but I'm willing to bet my administrator powers that he almost dies in at least one of those movies too.
So yeah. I can't stand Ash and Pikachu in the anime series, mostly because their lives seem like one big soap opera, but also because they can be so obnoxious.
That was my rant on Ash and Pikachu, hope you enjoyed it. ^^
